Meet Emily Beckett and Zach Rupke, a couple of Fleming College students: she’s from Peterborough, Ontario, and he’s from Cobourg. While studying pre-health together, they discovered Mobilize – and decided it would be a great opportunity to travel together and experience more of Canada, be independent and get some work experience along the way.
“We would recommend Mobilize to anyone,” says Emily. “We got to meet people from around the world, including Japan, the Philippines and Scotland, and we met people we really connected with – we’ve made some incredible, lifelong friends. Plus, it was a chance to be more independent. Mobilize helped me learn to rely on myself and gave me a lot of confidence.”
“For me, the best part of the program was getting the chance to see places I might otherwise never have gone to,” says Zach. “And meeting all these new people along the way.”
Mobilize has opportunities for groups of friends and couples like Emily and Zack to be deployment together, so that they can build lifelong memories together. Emily and Zack were sent on three deployments within beautiful British Columbia, that’s almost as far away from their Ontario roots as you can go without leaving the country!
Their Mobilize journey started with a deployment in Fort St. John, one of the largest cities along the Alaska Highway in the Peace River region of northeastern BC. Their second placement was in Valemount, a village in east central BC where crystal clear blue skies and gorgeous snow-capped peaks form the backdrop. And their third and last placement was in Invermere, at Copper Point Resort, which is tucked between the scenic Purcell and Rocky Mountains in The Kootenays region. They worked in a range of roles at the hospitality properties, including server, maintenance and housekeeping.
Great memories
Just a couple of weeks before heading home to Ontario at the end of their final placement, Zach and Emily had a chance to try kayaking and paddle boarding – and they loved it. It was just one of the many things – from hiking the Rockies to enjoying the snowy winter wonderland in BC – they got to try as part of their Mobilize experience.
“It was something we’d never done before,” says Emily, “And we felt very accomplished while doing it. What a great way to end an amazing year!”
Emily and Zach completed their Mobilize journey and returned home to Ontario earlier this year, in late spring. Zach’s next goal is to continue working in the hospitality industry within the province while exploring opportunities to work in business eventually. Emily is considering going back to school, possibly for nursing. Although their Mobilize journey is over Emily is definitely not done with the program. She hopes to maybe help out with Mobilize HQ and promote this lovely program in any way she can.
