Success factor #5: Make the experience hassle-free
In the last few posts, we’ve talked about some of the challenges of hiring millennials – and how employers can use our insights to attract them to industries facing a labour shortage. We’ve covered the need to make the experience exciting, educational, career-focused and structured. In this post, we share the fifth and final insight gained from talking to and working with millennials: employers need to make the experience easy.
When we say easy, we don’t mean the actual job. They aren’t afraid to work – the millennial work ethic is alive and well, it’s just a little different. By easy, we’re referring to the details around the job – interviewing, finding a place to live, moving, etc. – needing to be hassle-free. They don’t want to deal with interviewing at every stage, looking for housing in every placement, researching plane fares, etc. If you build it all in, hiring millennials gets easier. And your labour shortage headaches can finally be addressed.
Here’s why millennials are this way.
This is a generation that doesn’t remember a time before smartphones. They’re used to a world that’s intuitive and user-friendly – and always online. They can do whatever they want in a couple of clicks. They can go anywhere, find out about anything, have a pizza delivered, talk to friends, meet the love of their life, all without ever opening their mouths or taking out their wallets. They feel safe in their online world. They want adventure, but without a path laid out for them, they don’t know where to start.
So how do we create something that works for this generation?
Managing millennials is all about providing structure. We need to lay out the path, the guidelines, the terms and conditions. Set the boundaries for adventure. And we need to make it really easy for them to take the plunge.
We’ve learned that they will bail at the first major obstacle. You require five interviews? That’s way too much work. Want employees to find their own housing? Do you know how hard that is for a 19-year-old from Fredericton? Make it easy for millennials to work with you, and they will. And this could be the solution to your labour shortage. The jobs don’t have to be easy, but the experience definitely needs to be hassle-free.
The Mobilize program is designed to simplify the process of hiring millennials. We do all the recruiting, interviewing, hiring and placement. We deal with payroll so you don’t have to. We arrange housing and logistics. In a nutshell, we make it easy for you and your employees to succeed.
